About Father John Dear Public meetings and Mass (please scroll down the page if the links above do not work in your browser) Jesuit priest, peace activist, organizer, lecturer, Retreat leader and author, Father John Dear is an internationally known voice for peace and nonviolence. He has been arrested more than seventy-five times for acts of nonviolent civil disobedience, most famously in 1993 on the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for hammering on a F15 nuclear fighter bomber in an effort to "beat swords into ploughshares". As a consequence of that Ploughshares action, John was incarcerated for seventeen months (eight months in a tiny prison cell, and nine months of house arrest), his right to vote in the US was withdrawn, he is prohibited from traveling to certain countries and is subjected to increased scrutiny at airports. John is the author/editor of more than 20 books on peace and justice including 'Living Peace: A Spirituality of Contemplation and Action', 'Seeds of Nonviolence', and 'Put Down Your Sword'. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2008. More information about John, his articles and other resources are available on his web site.

* 5pm: shared meal, then John will give a homily followed by a Catholic Mass at the main gate (in the bus if wet weather), US Embassy, corner Fitzherbert Terrace and Murphy Street, Thorndon; * 7.30pm: Does Christianity Demand Pacifism? John will speak, followed by Q&A / discussion, in the hall, St John's in the City, corner Willis and Dixon Streets. A door charge of $10 or whatever you can afford (please do let the cost stop you from coming along!) is asked to help cover costs.
