Witches Against APEC Peace Movement AotearoaPO Box 9314, Wellington. Tel (04) 382 8129, fax (04) 382 8173, pma@apc.org.nzIssued 28 April 1999 From Witches High Command: Media Release Witches Against APEC claim Hex was a success - Chinese delegation leaves On 22 April 1999 the Witches Against APEC placed a hex on the Convention Centre and the Town Hall as these two venues were being used by the APEC officials and ministers meeting in Christchurch 26 April - 7 May. The witches promised that the hex, an ancient curse on those who worship at the altar of free trade, would disrupt the APEC meetings and undermine the APEC process. The departure of the Chinese delegation yesterday proves the power of the hex. Witches Against APEC claim complete success in disrupting the APEC Small and Medium Enterprises meeting and warn of bigger things to come in the APEC Senior Official Meeting over the next few days. This is just the beginning, by the time Auckland hosts the APEC Leaders Summit there will be no telling how powerful the hex will have become. The increasingly fragile APEC forum may fall over altogether. Witches Against APEC support the work of other groups in the community working to oppose the APEC agenda. "The work of others in the community, like the APEC Monitoring Group and GATT Watchdog in opposing APEC gives the hex its real power and the growing discontent with free trade and investment means the hex will continue to grow in strength." Transnational Corporations and others who have their snouts in the trough at APEC should heed this warning.
