Police aggression at a Free Tibet protest, Christchurch

POLICE AGGRESSION UPSETS NON-VIOLENT PROTESTERS

In their desperation to clear the route for chinese premier Jiang Xemin, to his State dinner, our local police acted overly aggressively in order to push protesters from his view and drown out the noise of the protesters by police sirens.

No arrests were made. Armourguard personnel were used to push protesters away from the police barricade which they had not crossed.

"In previous protests, where clear lines had also been negotiated with the local police, we were shocked and extremely upset by this unnecessary act of aggression clearly being carried out on orders from above, no doubt influenced by Chinese security personnel" said Gaye Dyson from Students for a Free Tibet.

"Many people from all walks of life had come out to show their support for the Tibetan Freedom struggle, including pregnant women and children, older people and students who were all committed to a non-violent and non-confrontational demonstration. It was just luck that no-one was badly hurt" said Christy Parker, Christchurch co-ordinator of Students for a Free Tibet.
