Urgent! Stop the sale of Te Kuri

6 August 2002

Kia ora,

this message is in two parts: for people in Wellington; and for everyone.

For people in Wellington

Support the Ngai Tämanuhiri Embassy.

From 9am Tuesday 6 August, to 5pm Friday 9 August, there will be a Ngai Tämanuhiri Embassy in parliament grounds from 9am to 5pm each day, demanding that the Crown (NZ government) stops the sale of Te Kuri (Young Nick's Head) to foreign parties.

Go along and support the Ngai Tämanuhiri Embassy, a place of non-violent protest. All visitors welcome; koha or kai would be appreciated. If you're planning any action of your own to oppose the sale of Te Kuri, it would be good if you check it out with the Ngai Tämanuhiri people first.

And you can do the things below too ...

For everyone

  • Sign the on-line petition at http://www.tekuri.com [note: this link was deactivated following hacking of the Te Kuri web site, February 2005]
  • Contact your MP, Helen Clark and Michael Cullen - ask whether selling Te Kuri is really 'in the national interest' for all New Zealand, and say you oppose the sale. Contact details: contact your local MP via their electorate office, or by telephone (04) 471 9999 and ask to be put through to their office; or write to them at Parliament Buildings, Wellington. Because of the urgency of this, please fast post your letter. Michael Cullen's office - email fax (04) 495 8442, tel (04) 470 6551; Helen Clark's office - email, fax (04) 473 3579, tel (04) 471 9998.
  • Support the Ngai Tamanuhiri opposition to the sale of Te Kuri - you can make a donation by sending a cheque or money order made payable to: Ngai Tamanuhiri Trust, PO Box 157, Manutuke, Gisborne, Aotearoa/NZ.
