The Lyttelton Peace Parade

The Lyttelton Peace Parade marched with banners on sun drenched streets. At least four hundred people gathered outside the fire station in London Street, all ages, cultures and faiths, mingling to the sounds of a veteran Salvation Army band.

There were speeches by: Bob Parker(Mayor); Moana Cole (Peace Activist); Ruth Dyson(MP); and Ola Kamel(Egyptian Community).

They reminded us to choose love, to accept each other, learn to overcome our differences peacefully and to stand against violence and terrorism.

We closed with a prayer of blessing by Howard Pilgrim. Invigorated and empowered by this special hour in our busy lives, we walked together up the street to ‘The Door’, an ex-Salvation Army hall, coincidently hosting its centenary this day, Wednesday September 11th. On this day reopening as a seven day community place of peace, creativity and spirituality. We all had cups of tea, club sandwiches and cake, and a community connected while peace videos played and a guitarist strummed melodic tones.

The ways of the future

are in our hands and

in our vibrant calls to peace and

in the creativity with which we inspire our communities to think again and

in every single relationship we have with one another, which will define our community and the changes we so desire in our nation will begin to occur as we come to the realisation that it all begins with us ... right here, right now.
