September 11: The Day the World Could Have Changed

St. Andrew's on The Terrace and Peace Movement Aotearoa are holding an event to remember, mourn, reflect and call for peace on September 11. Singers and speakers will join together from 6pm to 7 pm on Wednesday evening at St. Andrew's. The event is organised in response to the call from 'Peaceful Tomorrows', a group of US families of people who were killed in the September 11 attacks.

"The mission of 'Peaceful Tomorrows' is to seek effective, non-violent responses to terrorism, and to identify a commonality with all people affected by violence throughout the world, said Rev. Margaret Mayman of St. Andrew's. "These goals are shared by St. Andrew's on The Terrace and Peace Movement Aotearoa."

St. Andrew's and PMA wish to explore what it will take to bring healing and wholeness to our world. They believe that grief for loss of life from violence is universal and that connection among people is a source of hope for peace.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows ... We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means." This simple yet powerful statement has guided the work of September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows and is supported by St. Andrew's and PMA. "We invite the people of Wellington to join us in commemorating September 11 as a time to pursue peaceful tomorrows," said Dr. Mayman.

Speakers at the event will be Rev Dr Margaret Mayman, St Andrew's on the Terrace; Dr Ramon Das, Lecturer in Morality and International Relations, Victoria University; Tim Jones, author; and Jan Logie, Executive Director, YWCA Aotearoa/NZ. Singers are Don Franks and Jill Brasell, folk singers; and singer and writer, Hinemoana Baker.
