Statement of the General Assembly 16 September 2001 At the occasion of its General Assembly held in Brussels on 15-16 September in Brussels, the European Women's Lobby observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States and adopted the following message from the President Denise Fuchs, to European policy makers: The European Women's Lobby (EWL) shares the grief caused by the dramatic events in the United States and elsewhere. As a coalition of women's non-governmental organisations, the EWL expresses its compassion with the American people and has sent a message of solidarity to women's NGOs in America. The EWL is addressing this message to European policy makers in light of the absence of women's voices in the current debate on the events themselves and the future response that will emerge and calls on the Member States of the EU to take the time to reflect on what this reaction will be so that it is not one of revenge but rooted in the values of the very nature of Europe, based on peace, democracy and to stimulate the energy around these values to develop a vision in which all citizens can share. Statement of the General Assembly of the European Women's Lobby, Brussels,15 and 16 September 2001.
