Peace Brigades International East Timor Project

15 Jun 1999

Volunteers sought Peace Brigades International (PBI), an international, independent non-governmental organization working for human rights and nonviolent conflict resolution since 1981, has been invited to establish a longterm presence in East Timor. In April PBI sent an exploration team to East Timor to determine the feasibility of doing such work, and is now reviewing the request.

It is proposed that an initial team be sent in time to observe the referendum on autonomy currently planned for August 8. PBI would then remain on a longterm basis to conduct ongoing protective accompaniment of local activists and assist in non-violence training and education.

PBI will be seeking applications for the longterm team from people experienced in non-violence and human rights work with competance in Indonesian or Tetun languages. Volunteers should be over 25 years old, able to live in rural areas under conditions of stress, and able to work in a non-partisan way in situations of extreme civil conflict. Minimum time commitment for the team would be six months. PBI covers living expenses for team members plus a modest allowance.

If you are interested please contact PBI East Timor Project including information on your relevant experience and possible period of availability for the team.
