Action Alert - More nuclear tests

Peace Movement Aotearoa

PO Box 9314, Wellington. Tel (04) 382 8129, fax (04) 382 8173, pma@xtra.co.nz

Issued 14 May 1998

Kia ora,

Further to our Action Alert of 12 May, you may have heard that India has detonated another two nuclear devices. We really don’t have any new comments to make, please refer to the 12 May Alert for our thoughts on the test series.

Just to repeat for you the most salient contact details :

* Indian High Commissioner - Mr Kipgen, P0 Box 4045, Wellington. tel (04) 473 6390, fax (04) 499 0665.

If you wish to convey your comments direct to the Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, you can apparently fax him on + 91 11 301 6857. For those of you with Internet facilities, there is a feedback form for comments to the Indian government on http://alfa.nic.in/feedback.html

Also, as the Pakistan government has now made various threats about detonating a nuclear device in retaliation, perhaps if you didn’t have time to contact their representative the other day you could do that today :

* Pakistan - Deputy High Commissioner - Mr Amir Shadani, 4 Timbarra Cres, O’Malley, Canberra, ACT 2606, Australia. Tel + 61 2 6290 1676, fax + 61 2 6290 1073.

There are some other things you could do :

1) given the mass media publicity around these nuclear tests, this seems a particularly appropriate time to collect more signatures for the Abolition 2000 international petition calling for an end to the nuclear arms race. You can get your copies of the petition from PMA - a copy can be faxed to you, sent by post, or as an email attachment to those of you who have Word 97 or a later edition of Word (because of the graphic on the petition, we don’t think it can be opened in earlier versions).

We are hoping to have uploaded the first few pages of our web site within the next week, and you will be able to print a copy of the petition from there http://www.converge.org.nz/pma/

2) a reminder too of the postcards with the anti-nuclear message from Mountbatten (last Viceroy of India) which you can send to diplomatic representatives, MPs, government ministers or whatever. They are available from the Peace Foundation, PO Box 4110, Auckland 1, tel (09) 373 2379,
