Media coverage sensationalised - gun shop owner

20 October 2007

A gun shop owner who supplied some of the goods for camps allegedly at the centre of police raids this week says the media are exaggerating the story and claims of people being terrorised by the police action.

David Tipple of Gun City in Christchurch supplied about 5% of the goods, including a gun cabinet and magazines, to one of the men facing charges under the Arms Act.

Mr Tipple says much of the weaponry seized is hardly capable of use in a terrorist attack and he has lashed out at television coverage of events, which he says has been sensational.

He says a plastic paintball landmine was described as a landmine, and he says such sensationalism is frightening people.

Mr Tipple says journalists need to be better educated about weaponry before reporting such stories.
