Kia ora,

Te Hikoi mo te Tumanako mo te Rawakore / the Hikoi of Hope continues ! Below are the routes which will be taken during the second week, but some reminders first.

  1. For those of you planning to travel to Wellington for the I October and the arrival of the hikoi at Parliament, Tranzrail are offering discounts on ferry and rail travel. To book, you must ring 0800 878 898, not your usual Tranzrail booking agent. There are special conditions applying to these bookings.
  2. Hikoi t-shirts (sizes S to XXXL are $17-95, larger sizes are available on special order at $25-00 each), bumper stickers ( $2-00, available in Maori or English) are available from the Anglican Resource Centre in Wellington - fax 04 499-1360; order forms are also available from the Hikoi web-site, see signature following ours at the end of this message for that url.
  3. There are five Hikoi of Hope Backgrounder sheets - real jobs, housing, health, poverty and education. These sheets are an excellent summary of the situation in Aotearoa / NZ in each topic area, and explain clearly why the Hikoi of Hope is so necessary.
We have paper copies here at PMA, and are happy to send you a photocopy on receipt of your postal address, they are proving very popular !

ka kite ano,
Edwina.

Hi To All Hikoi People

Just to let you all know that Caritas has just published a booklet called Employment and Justice. Employment and Justice is the third in the Social Justice Series issued by Caritas, and was published to coincide with Social Justice Week for the Catholic Church in NZ - 20th to 26th September (the previous two in the series looked at poverty, and housing/homelessness).

The booklet may complement the Hikoi backgrounder (flyer) on employment. I hope it will be a good resource for those participating in the Hikoi.

The booklet looks at a number of issues including Unemployment, Pay and Income, Conditions of Work, Employment-related and Economic policy. It is also attractively presented with a full colour cover and photos. The booklet encourages an exploration of issues effecting workers, both employed and unemployed, from an ethical and spiritual perspective, and to develop a response based on a sense of justice.

If you would like copies, they are available from Caritas for the special price of $3 per copy incl postage and packaging. Please let me know if you are interested.

Also, Caritas has produced a poster for Social Justice Week which reads 'Work is for People, and not People for Work' (John Paul II, LE 6). It is also very attractive (even though I say so myself!). We have copies available for people free of charge. Again, let me know if you would like some.
