Food trucked with radioactive waste 10 November, 1999 - MEDIA RELEASE GIZ WATSON, MLC, Member for North Metropolitan Region BEER SHIPPED WITH RADIOACTIVE WASTE A truck carrying radioactive material delivered food supplies to Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara region, says Greens MLC Giz Watson. "Last month, trucks operated by Nexus Transport carried large Seatainers marked with radioactive warning symbols from Perth to the Pilbara," Ms. Watson said. "One of these trucks delivered food to the Jigalong Aboriginal community before dropping off beer at the Ironclad hotel in Marble Bar and continuing on to the proposed Kintyre uranium mine site." Ms. Watson yesterday asked the acting Minister for Health to identify the nature of the shipment and the risks associated with transporting the material through the region. The Minister said the shipment was carrying yellow cake uranium, ore and processed samples back to the mine site. He said the shipments occurred once every 2 years and there were no risks to communities.
