Update: Genoa arrests

26 July 2001

Kia ora,

Re the alert 'Wellington journalist arrested at Genoa’ (24 July 2001), this is to let you know that the charges against Sam have been dropped. Sam, along with many of the others arrested during the violent raid by Italian police on Saturday night, remains in the custody pending deportation from Italy.

Today more than 40 people rallied outside the Italian Consulate in Wellington at lunchtime in support of those arrested on Saturday night following the protests against the G8 summit in Genoa.

The rally was one of many being held this week by people around the world calling for:

a full investigation into Italian police activities during and after the G8 summit, including extensive brutality resulting in at least one death and many injuries;

to ensure that those still imprisoned are provided with adequate medical treatment, legal representation and are treated fairly within the justice system.

Today’s rally also called for the Italian government to return documents and computer equipment seized during a raid on the Independent Media Centre that was conducted at the same time as the raid on the school building across the road. A number of computers were damaged by police in the raid, and one English journalist was beaten by police outside the building.
