NZ must break military ties with Indonesia - Green Party 10 September 1999 The Green Party wants New Zealand to follow the Pentagon's lead and break its military ties with Indonesia. "We should end our Mutual Assistance Programme to the Indonesian armed forces and end the training of six Indonesian military officers currently in New Zealand with the NZ Defence Force, said Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke. "The Indonesian military has defied world opinion in continuing its destruction of East Timor. It has been acting like the Pol Pot forces in terrorising the population, emptying towns and looting property in an effort to reverse the independence process," said Mr Locke. "We cannot in good conscience have any continuing relationship with the armed forces of Indonesian, which have obviously orchestrated the violent campaign against Timorese independence, and which won't obey orders from the civilian government," said Mr Locke.
