Nuclear-free NZ? Letter to the Editor 11 January 2003 Sir - With regards to the suggestion that we should "move on" from our ban on nuclear-powered ships (A6, January 11), I cannot help but wonder what business the United States has trying to coerce us into scrapping legislation that New Zealanders campaigned long and hard for. Could it be that the Labour government is being slow to see the connection between our anti-nuclear stance and trade because there is no link other than the United States' desire for us all to be one big nuclear family? I admire Mr. Brownlee's taking a stand that will prove unpopular with many New Zealanders. I also agree that it is time for us to discuss our involvement with the American military. We should not strengthen our ties to such a belligerent, especially not in exchange for deeper involvement in an economic system that holds three-quarters of the world's people in poverty.
