Bougainville wants independence

Radio Australia - World News - 17 June 99 (2.53pm)

Bougainville People's Congress working for independence from PNG

The President of the newly-formed Bougainville People's Congress, Joe Kabui , says working for independence from Papua New Guinea is the main goal of the Congress.

The Congress met this week, and Mr Kabui says approval was given to begin negotiations with the P-N-G Government on Bougainville's political future.

Mr Kabui says there's general support among the people of Bougainville for independence, but the P-N-G Government has consistently said independence is NOT an option.

Meanwhile, Bougainville rebel leader Francis Ona is reported as saying he will support any moves to negotiate on independence.

The comment opens the way for a reconciliation with Mr Kabui -- the two men fell out last year when a cease-fire agreement for Bougainville was signed.
