US pays long overdue payments back to the UN 17 November 1999
US pays a hungry world - THE White House has claimed victory in a seven-year struggle to persuade Congress to release almost $US1 billion ($1.53 billion) in back payments to the UN, just days after the international body released a study documenting the desperate plight of the world's hungry. Under the landmark agreement reached in the US, Congress agreed to release the money owed to the UN. In exchange, the White House said it would accept restrictions, imposed by anti-abortionist representatives, on US money going to groups that perform abortions overseas or lobby for liberalised abortion overseas. Many congressional Republicans oppose abortion on moral or religious grounds and do not want US money to be used to support population-control programs that advocate abortion.
