Iraq Sanctions Peace Movement AotearoaPO Box 9314, Wellington. Tel (04) 382 8129, fax (04) 382 8173, pma@apc.org.nzIssued 31 March 1999 Kia ora, the signatures collected for the international petition calling for an end to the economic sanctions aginst the people of Iraq will be presented to parliament on :
Thursday, 8 April Speakers include : Graham Kelly (MP), respresentatives from Peace Movement Aotearoa and the Iraq Sanctions Medical Alert Group, and more ! Copies of the names and towns or cities of all who signed the petition have now gone to New York where they will be presented to Kofi Annan - we think this will happen this coming Friday which is the 8th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 687 by the Security Council. The Resolution did not allow for the continual attacks on the people of Iraq, nor that hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's would die from starvation as a result of the sanctions. What it does mention in the preamble is the need for a weapons-of-mass-destruction- free-zone in the whole Middle East - perhaps a more useful way forward than going on bombing and starving the Iraqis. Copies of the names and towns or cities of all who signed the petition have also now gone to Washington where they will be presented to a representative of the US government (Al Gore, we think) in a couple of weeks time. Thanks to all who distributed the petition forms, and all who signed it. For further in formation, see "Stop killing the people of Iraq"
