Gun control - submissions
26 August 1999
Public submissions on the Firearms Amendment Bill (no 2) are due by 17 September 1999.
The Bill, which requires that all firearms be registered, has gone to the Justice and Law reform Select Committee. Copies of the Bill are available from Bennetts Bookshop (Wellington) or the Coalition for Gun Control in email or paper form. You can reach the Coalition at PO Box 503, Whangaparaoa. Tel / fax (09) 424 2302,
guncontrol@pl.net
Some points the Coalition suggest you could include in your submission are :
* that registration of all guns in this country is long overdue, * the establishment of an independent authority is essential; * adequate resources must be forthcoming to implement safe storage practices; * funding must be made available to institute gun-related public safety measures.
If you wish to appear before the committee to give a spoken submission you can must indicate that on your submission, and if you are from outside Wellington you could ask that they come to your area.
25 copies of your submission should be sent to Jayne Wallis, Clerk, Justice and Law Reform Committee, Parliament House, Wellington to reach her by 17 September. If you have any enquiries about the submission process, you can telephone her on (04) 471 9539.
