Armed coup in Fiji

19 May 2000

Kia ora, there are mixed reports coming through about today's coup by armed men in Fiji. An Agence France-Presse report has included stories of rioting and fires in Suva.

Our first concern has been to establish the well-being of the PCRC / NFIP staff in Suva, but at this point in time we have been unable to contact them due to problems with the telephone lines into Fiji. On the rare occasions that the phone does ring it is going unanswered, but this is not an immediate cause for alarm. We hope to reach them over the weekend and will update you all on the situation on Monday.

In the meantime, there are two websites which are carrying regularly updated news reports from Fiji - one is the Pacific Reports site at http://pidp.ewc.hawaii.edu/pireport/text.htm ; the other appears to be being used by the coup leader George Speight and is at http://www.fijilive.com.

See alsp Phil Goff's media release 'New Zealand government condemns coup attempt'.
