and violence. There is background information to this message which you can get from
Christina or PMA. Thursdays in Black invites all people of Aotearoa/New Zealand to
wear black on Thursdays, teamed with a badge or T-shirt which reads: 'Thursdays in Black
- demanding a world without rape and violence'. This is a gesture of solidarity
for all women, men and children threatened by violence in war on the streets and
in the home. Please support our campaign and our National Day of Action, and wear black on

- WEDNESDAY, 19 May
, National Day of Silence. The third annual National Day of Silence (NDOS) will be
held on Wednesday May 19th 1999. This year's event protests the silence created by
homophobia. Participants are provided with explanatory cards to hand out which read:
"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I support takatapui, lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender rights. People who are silent today believe that laws and
attitudes should be inclusive of people of all sexual orientations. The Day of Silence
is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression, and prejudice.
Think about the voices you are not hearing. What can you do to end the silence?"

- THURSDAY, 20 MAY
, nationwide release of 'Punitive Damage' begins in Auckland (there is a fundraising
preview screening in Auckland on 19 May - see local listings) and Wellington. This
film tells the story of Kamal, a young NZ student who travelled to East Timor in
1991 to support the pro-democracy movement. Three weeks after his arrival he was shot and
killed by the Indonesian armed forces. Kamal's mother, NZ journalist Helen Todd,
began a personal and political campaign to make sure her son had not died in vain.
This spanned five countries and four years and culminated in a US court where she won a landmark
legal case against the Indonesian military. Directed by Annie Goldson, producer is
Gaylene Preston.
Our PMA previewer who watched the film last week says it is excellent, well put together
and you should make an effort to go see it. It has loads of background information,
gives the context to, and provides a useful overview of, the situation in East Timor. She says it would be especially informative for people who know very little about
the situation. However, the East Timor Action reviewers also highly recommended it
as a film not to be missed.
