Wellington - this week

Peace Movement Aotearoa

PO Box 9314, Wellington. Tel (04) 382 8129, fax (04) 382 8173, pma@apc.org.nz

Issued 5 April 1999

Bombing is not a solution

The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia has worsened the humanitarian disaster in the Balkans, provoked further atrocities and greatly increased regional instability.

Join the candlelit vigil, Thursday, 15 April
from 5.30pm to 6.30pm at the Cenotaph
(cnr Bowen St and Lambton Quay)

Add your voice to those of people around the world calling for an end to the bombing - as the first step towards starting to build lasting peace in the region.

We will be remembering all the victims of the tragedy in Yugoslavia.

Every day from 30 March to 9 April

while the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and surrounding countries continues, go along at anytime between 12 noon and 1pm to the US embassy and light a candle to remember all the victims of war in Yugoslavia. There will be someone there from the community of people of Yugoslavian descent living in Wellington during this time each day, they wish only to have quiet, peaceful protest - so please respect that if you go.

From time to time, probably Wednesday and Friday this week, there will be a gathering for a peaceful vigil - as soon as the times for these are confirmed we will leave a message on our voicemail, tel PMA (04) 382 8129 to get these details.

Thursday

- the signatures on the international petition calling for the lifting of the economic sanctions which are killing the people of Iraq in their thousands every month will be presented to parliament. This will take place at 12-30pm, on the steps of parliament.

Speakers include :

  • Peace Movement Aotearoa - on Resolution 687 (the eighth anniversary of its adoption by the Security Council was on 3 April) and the continuing bombing of the people of Iraq, and NZ government support for both the bombing and the sanctions;

  • Iraq Sanctions Medical Alert Group - on the appalling public health disaster created in part by the bombing and destruction of Iraq's infrastructure, and by the economic sanctions which prevent access to the most basic food, medical and sanitation supplies.

  • Graham Kelly MP - will receive the petitions and summarise the need for the sanctions to be lifted immediately.

The petitions are also being presented on our behalf to Kofi Annan's office in New York and to the US government in Washington.
