"The recent earthquake [October 2005] has caused unprecedented devastation in Jammu and Kashmir killing thousands of people on both sides of Kashmir. Besides, thousands of houses have been razed to ground and thousands rendered unfit for human habitation in different villages compelling people to live under open sky in harsh cold weather. Relief to inaccessible areas, where people are in immediate need, is a gigantic task with numerous challenges." ATHROT Relief Action Program for Earthquake Victims, is a collective effort of independent voluntary organisations including the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, Kashmir Times Publications, Jammu and Kashmir Yateem Foundation, Doctors Offering Care, Help Poor Voluntary Trust, Friends of Humanity, Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, Students Helpline, Kashmiri Women's Initiative for Peace and Disarmament, Apna Ghar, Youth for Humanity, Firdous Educational Trust for Orphans, M.D. Foundation, Bar Association Budgam, students from Kashmir University and various Colleges and members from the business community.
