23 September 2004 Central North Island people who missed out on the May hikoi to Parliament protesting over proposed foreshore and seabed legislation are to take part in a similar protest planned for Auckland streets next month. Nga Tai o Te Reinga treasurer and hikoi organiser Bernie Hornfeck said there had been emails and inquiries from people who had not had the opportunity to join the Wellington hikoi which drew marchers from around the country. Many people, not only Maori, were concerned about the outcome of the foreshore legislation, Mr Hornfeck said. "There are dozens of people who are really worried where this could all lead. "Maori are concerned about losing their cultural right and Pakeha are scared privatisation of the sea will see them having to pay like in the past when the Government has privatised different things." A waka taua (war canoe) from Thames with 60 paddlers on board, along with a flotilla of waka from throughout the country, would escort protesters when the hikoi headed along Tamaki Drive towards Orakei Marae at Bastion Point. Another hikoi, organised by Hawke's Bay iwi Ngati Kahungunu will take place later in the year. |
