The second foreshore and seabed hikoi Hikoi Tuarua Press Release
6 September 2004 "Maori rights ... based on mana atua, mana whenua and mana tupuna will become meaningless" Hone Harawira, May 2004 "The Fight Isn't Over Yet" "It's on, and we hope our Pacific brothers and sisters will join us." This call is being made by Annette Sykes for the hikoi and rally being held in Auckland next month to protest the government's continued opposition to Maori rights to the foreshore and seabed. The hikoi, organised by groups in Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland will end at Okahu Bay under the mana of the tangata whenua, Ngati Whatua. Hikoi organiser Annette Sykes says "The select committee hearings on the foreshore bill were a farce. The Maori voice has been blocked as only 10% of the 4,000 submissions were heard." "Hapu up and down the country have now seen first hand that the government is not listening." "Auckland has the largest gathering of Pacific peoples in the world and we call on them, our Pacific whanau, and all peoples of Aotearoa / New Zealand to join Maori in the Hikoi." "As we would support their rights to resources in their nations, we ask that they join Maori as we Hikoi to ensure our rights are upheld," said Ms Sykes. "The partnership between Maori and our Pacific whanau is a powerful statement about our collective indigenous rights." The Foreshore Hikoi is for all New Zealanders. It's about justice for all." The Hikoi will be preceded by rallies at the final select committee hearings in Auckland on September 27-29. The fight is not yet over. Hikoi Date - Saturday October 16 2004 The hikoi will assemble in Mayoral Drive (behind Aotea Square), Auckland City, will leave there at 10am and will proceed down Queen Street, along Tamaki Drive to the whakatau by Ngati Whatua at Orakei Domain, Okahu Bay. To relieve traffic congestion, whanau are urged to car pool or travel by public transport or bus. Parking will be available at the Orakei Marae. Hikoi representatives have met with Ngati Whatua, Police and City Council representatives to finalise logistical arrangements for the Hikoi.
