Alternative ANZAC Day events 2009
You are warmly invited to 'A celebration of our peacemakers: past and present' - various speakers have been asked to speak for 5 minutes only. There will be time for songs, poems and other 5 minute presentations from those who come, children are most welcome. A badgemaking machine will be there for those who wish to design their own badges. From 5pm to 6pm followed by a cup of tea and biscuits, at the WEA, 59 Gloucester Street; free entry, a koha to defray expenses would be appreciated. "This Anzac Day afternoon will be the first public performance of Michael Galvin's play War Hero at Downstage Theatre, Wellington, April 25, 3pm, a play inspired by We Will Not Cease by Archibald Baxter and commissioned as part of the Bruce Mason Playwriting award. The playreading, directed by Murray Lynch, will be accompanied by projection of celebrated paintings by Bob Kerr, which also tell Baxter's story, as featured in Field Punishment No.1 by David Grant, a history of conscientious objection in New Zealand. Archibald Baxter was one of 14 conscientious objectors who were forcibly transported to the front line in France during the First World War where they were subjected to a variety of disciplinary measures, including the barbaric ‘No. 1 field punishment'." Speaker and film at the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Tamaki Makaurau/ Auckland Branch AGM: in the morning Abigael Vogt will be giving a report about the Association of Women in Development Conference she attended in South Africa, where she and some other New Zealand women did a presentation.
